Welcome to the website of the Medical Statistics Section of the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The website contains information pertinent to our faculty, staff members, computing facilities, and research activities. We hope that you will find the information in this website useful.
The Medical Statistics Section was established in 1998 as the Division of Hematology/Oncology's resource for statistical consultation and collaborative research support for the School of Medicine ’s research programs and investigators.
Over the past 8 years, the Medical Statistics Section has grown from 8 full time personnel in 1998 to its current 11 faculty members under the leadership of Seng-jaw Soong, PhD, professor of medicine and biostatistics.
The MSS faculty has diverse expertise in biostatistics and bioinformatics to meet the research needs of the UAB Medical Center. It also has 28 supporting staff members in the areas of computing, data management, research coordination and administration. The Section occupies more than 10,000 square feet of space in the North Pavilion, the Wallace Tumor Institute and the nearby Liberty National Building. We maintain state-of-the-art computing and data management facilities to support the Center’s research activities. Currently, the Section has an annual operating budget of more than 3.1 million dollars, and during the past 12 months the Unit provided statistical and bioinformatic support for 68 peer-reviewed grants and contracts, the majority of which are funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The faculty members of the MSS published 225 manuscripts during the past five-year period (1999-2003), and most of these publications were in collaboration with the Center’s other investigators.
The MSS has continued to grow since its inception, and we anticipate that this growth will continue. We appreciate your visiting our website, and if you need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us at cwpitts@uab.edu.
